Slashing Penalties
To safeguard the Krown Blockchain’s security and reliability, a slashing mechanism penalizes validators who fail to fulfill their duties or act maliciously. By putting staked tokens at risk, slashing ensures accountability and deters behavior that could harm the network.
1. Reasons for Slashing
Validators face penalties for specific offenses, including:
Double Signing: Signing two conflicting blocks at the same height, an attempt to fork the blockchain or deceive the network. This is a severe breach of trust.
Inactivity: Failing to validate a block when selected, often due to being offline or unresponsive. This disrupts transaction processing and network efficiency.
Malicious Behavior: Approving invalid transactions, colluding to manipulate the blockchain, or engaging in other actions that undermine security or integrity.
2. Penalty Mechanism
Automatic Slashing: When misbehavior is detected—via consensus rules or network monitoring—a portion of the validator’s staked KROWN is automatically forfeited. This process is transparent and enforced by the blockchain’s protocol.
Severity-Based Penalties: The amount slashed varies by offense:
Minor Infractions (e.g., brief inactivity): A small percentage (e.g., 1-5%) of the staked tokens may be lost, serving as a warning.
Major Violations (e.g., double signing or malice): A significant portion (e.g., 20-50% or more) could be slashed, reflecting the threat posed to the network.
Economic Incentive: With their staked tokens on the line, validators are strongly motivated to adhere to protocol rules and maintain uptime, as penalties directly impact their holdings.
3. Deterring Malicious Actors
Financial Consequences: Slashing imposes a tangible cost, making dishonest or negligent behavior unprofitable. Validators risk losing more than they could gain from misconduct.
Network Security: By punishing bad actors, slashing reinforces trust in the Krown Blockchain. Honest validators are protected, and the system remains resilient against attacks or disruptions.
Encouraging Reliability: The threat of penalties ensures validators invest in reliable infrastructure—such as stable internet connections and redundant systems—to avoid unintentional slashing due to downtime.
